X-Men '97: A Fresh Spin on a Beloved Classic

X-Men '97, an American animated television series, is the latest offering from the creative genius of Beau DeMayo, available for streaming on Disney+. This series is a revival of the iconic X-Men: The Animated Series (1992–1997), taking off from where the original series concluded.

The plot centers around the X-Men, who face dangerous new challenges following the loss of their leader, Professor X. The series is produced by Marvel Studios Animation, with DeMayo serving as the chief writer for the first two seasons, and Jake Castorena overseeing as the supervising director.

The show has resurrected several characters from the original series. A slew of cast members return to reprise their roles, or to voice new characters, including the likes of Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Catherine Disher, Chris Potter, among many others.

After being first discussed in June 2019, the revival was formally announced in November 2021. Chase Conley and Emi Yonemura also contributed by directing multiple episodes. The series marks the first X-Men project from Marvel Studios since they regained the film and television rights to the characters. The animation was done by Studio Mir, presenting a contemporary take on the original series' style.

X-Men '97 premiered its first two episodes on March 20, 2024, and was met with critical acclaim. The rest of the ten-episode first season was released on a weekly basis until May 15. Fans will be thrilled to know that a second season is already in the pipeline, with a third season also in the planning stages.

The series picks up the narrative thread from X-Men: The Animated Series (1992–1997), showing the X-Men confronting new threats in the wake of their leader, Professor Charles Xavier's departure. The cast includes a star-studded lineup with Ray Chase as Scott Summers / Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Ororo Munroe / Storm, Cal Dodd as Logan / Wolverine, and many more.

The X-Men '97 series was officially announced in November 2021, with Beau DeMayo as head writer and executive producer, and Jake Castorena as supervising director. This is the first X-Men project from Marvel Studios since they regained the film and television rights to the characters.

Work on the second season commenced by July 2022, and writing for the second season finale began by July 2023. However, DeMayo was let go by Marvel Studios in March 2024, just ahead of the series' premiere.

The series is an extension of the original X-Men series, but with a fresh spin added by the Marvel Studios team. The plot explores the relevance of Xavier's dream of mutant/human co-existence in the modern era, with a special focus on empathy. The series retains the essence of the 1990s X-Men team and sees them reunite following an impactful event.

X-Men '97 is not just a revival, but a reimagination of a cherished classic, guaranteed to enthrall both old fans and new viewers. It's a testament to the enduring appeal of these timeless characters and an exciting addition to the X-Men universe. This series is a must-watch for all superhero enthusiasts and promises a thrilling ride full of adventure, emotions, and nostalgia.
